The electron microprobe is widely used in the analysis of minerals and has the enormous advantage, from the point of view of the crystallographer, that clean individual grains can be examined even without separation from gangue or matrix.

Despite the development of primary methods of calibration using pure metals or synthetic crystals, a need for analyzed natural minerals remains, if not for direct calibration, to check the sometimes complex calculations and corrections required when operating in the primary mode.

Very few mineral separates are sufficiently pure and "homogeneous" to serve well as microprobe standards.

An important source of microprobe Reference Materials is available at Mineral Stats Inc., from a collection accumulated over the years by C.O. Ingamells.  For more information, tell us which minerals you would be interested in.  These extremely valuable Reference Materials are available in vials of 50 to 200 milligrams, depending on the Reference Material and the supply.
